to tell a story is to become magic, to capture an audience is historic, to tell a story that will open the eyes of people,make them forget about their crappy lifes, make them aspire to become a better person,or just plain intertain them is creative. I love movies, their a window into another world were you can create whatever is on your mind.

Film making isnt this great big noble thing to do. Its no more *important* than being a plumber. Ill bet more people listen to ideas that plumbers have than to ideas in movies.....
Filmmakers just have louder voices, thats all. If what you say aint worth hearing, it'll get ignored.

I agree with eddie. Actors, producers, etc are filled with all this great self-importance it makes me cringe. They're no more important to society than the man who collects our garbage. When I meet, see big names I look at them like anyone else. It's not a very productive kind of job and as much as I crave to be apart of it, I cannot help feeling a sense of guilt that I'm not wanting to have a proper job.

Okay We've it seems just entered into a philosophical debate over wherther film is art.

The truth is there are 2 types of movie.
1)the simple entertaining movie, (see most of Hollywoods output)
2) The movie that the director/writer has put some personal belief into.

We all regard music as art. But no-one would call Steps artists, and it's those types that have the Ego problems. You need to seperate the two, so Yes I believe movie directors can be a more important part of society than the man who as no wish to inspire others.

wastedspace: that is bullshit. for example, what happens if a movie has personal stuff put in by the writer and the director (what about the dp, editor, composer and people in other creative positions by the way?) and the audience thinks it's a "simple entertaining movie"? what i'm saying is: there's no use in having two categories if it's impossible to know which category any given film belongs to.

Can you honestley say you can't tell the difference between a commercial movie with personal 'stuff' in it, and a personal movie.
If not you might have to examine why you enjoy movies.

well, from my own point of view (major source of error right away) i can say that i can tell the difference when it comes to the one or two percent that falls at each end of the spectrum. most films are made for "personal" reasons by the creative staff and for commercial reasons by the executive staff, and categorizing becomes a very hard thing to do, and it will depend on taste to a very high degree. and by the way, if you can't see that very often the commercial movies also has something to tell us, maybe it's you who have to examine something...
